Cannabis is not medicine. This guide is educational, not medical advice. The strains and approaches described here reflect common consumer preferences, not clinical recommendations. If you have a sleep disorder or chronic insomnia, consult a healthcare provider. Cannabis may help some people relax, but it is not a substitute for professional medical care.

Context

Why People Use Cannabis for Sleep

Many cannabis consumers report that certain strains help them unwind at the end of the day. The relaxing effects of specific terpene and cannabinoid profiles can create a sense of physical calm and mental quiet that some people find conducive to sleep.

This is not a medical claim. Sleep is complex, and cannabis affects everyone differently. Some people find that cannabis helps them fall asleep faster, while others find that it disrupts their sleep architecture over time. Individual results vary significantly.

What we can say is that certain terpene profiles and indica-dominant genetics are consistently preferred by consumers who use cannabis as part of their nighttime routine. The strains and terpenes below are the ones most commonly associated with relaxation.

Terpenes

Terpenes for Relaxation

These three terpenes are the most commonly found in strains that consumers associate with calming, sedating, or body-heavy effects.

Myrcene

Earthy, musky, herbal with hints of clove

The most abundant terpene in cannabis. Myrcene-dominant strains are frequently associated with sedating, body-heavy effects. It is the terpene most commonly linked to the classic couch-lock experience. Also found in mangoes, lemongrass, and hops.

Often 0.5-2.0% in relaxing strains

Linalool

Floral, lavender, sweet with light spice

The same terpene that gives lavender its calming reputation. Linalool-rich strains tend to produce calm, soothing experiences. It is one of the rarer dominant terpenes in cannabis but makes a significant difference when present. Also found in lavender, mint, and cinnamon.

Typically 0.1-0.5% when present

Caryophyllene

Spicy, peppery, warm, woody

Unique because it interacts with CB2 receptors in the body. Caryophyllene is associated with grounding, body-centered effects. Strains with high caryophyllene alongside myrcene often produce deeply relaxing experiences. Also found in black pepper, cloves, and cinnamon.

Often 0.2-1.0% in relaxing strains
Strains

Indica-Dominant Strains for Sleep

These strains are consistently popular among consumers who use cannabis as part of their nighttime routine. Availability varies by dispensary and season.

Granddaddy Purple

Indica-dominant
17-24%

THC Range

One of the most well-known nighttime strains. Granddaddy Purple typically produces heavy body effects and a calm, drowsy mental state. Its grape and berry flavor profile makes it a pleasant evening choice.

Key Terpenes: Myrcene, Caryophyllene, Pinene

Northern Lights

Indica
16-21%

THC Range

A classic pure indica with decades of breeding history. Northern Lights is known for fast-acting physical relaxation and a peaceful headspace. One of the most recommended strains for people who have trouble winding down.

Key Terpenes: Myrcene, Caryophyllene, Linalool

Bubba Kush

Indica-dominant
15-22%

THC Range

Earthy, coffee-like flavor with heavy body effects. Bubba Kush tends to produce strong physical relaxation without overly sedating mental effects, making it good for the transition period before sleep.

Key Terpenes: Caryophyllene, Limonene, Myrcene

Afghani

Indica
15-20%

THC Range

A landrace strain from the mountains of Afghanistan. Afghani produces deep, heavy-body relaxation with earthy, hash-like flavors. Its relatively moderate THC range makes it accessible for less experienced consumers.

Key Terpenes: Myrcene, Pinene, Caryophyllene

Blueberry

Indica-dominant
17-24%

THC Range

Sweet blueberry flavor with long-lasting, full-body relaxation. Blueberry has been a staple in dispensaries for decades and is frequently recommended for evening and nighttime use.

Key Terpenes: Myrcene, Caryophyllene, Linalool
Methods

Flower vs Edibles for Sleep

Flower (Smoking/Vaping)

  • Onset: 5-15 minutes
  • Duration: 1-3 hours
  • Best for: falling asleep quickly
  • Drawback: may wear off before morning
  • Timing: 30-60 minutes before bed

Edibles

  • Onset: 30 minutes to 2 hours
  • Duration: 4-8 hours
  • Best for: staying asleep through the night
  • Drawback: harder to predict onset timing
  • Timing: 1-2 hours before bed
Dosing

Dosing for Nighttime Use

Start low and go slow, especially if you are new to using cannabis for sleep. Taking too much can produce anxiety or racing thoughts, which is the opposite of what you want at bedtime.

Edible Dosing

5-10mg THC

1-2 hours before bedtime

Beginners: start at 2.5-5mg. Experienced consumers may use 10-25mg. Always wait the full onset period before redosing.

Flower Dosing

1-2 puffs

30-60 minutes before bedtime

Start with one small inhalation and wait 10-15 minutes. Add more only if needed. You can always take more but you cannot take less.

Caution

What to Avoid Before Bed

High-Potency Sativas

Sativa-dominant strains with energizing terpene profiles (limonene, pinene-dominant) can produce stimulating, cerebral effects that keep your mind active.

High THC Without CBD

Very high THC products (above 25%) without any CBD can increase the likelihood of anxiety and racing thoughts, especially for less experienced consumers.

Daytime/Energy Strains

Strains marketed as energizing, uplifting, or creative are designed for the opposite of sleep. Check the label or ask your budtender about the intended use.

Large Doses

More is not better for sleep. Overconsumption can produce uncomfortable effects including paranoia and increased heart rate that make sleep harder, not easier.
