Canopy / Edibles
Edibles hit differently.
When you smoke or vape cannabis, THC enters your bloodstream through the lungs in seconds. Edibles take a completely different path: through the stomach, into the liver, and then into the bloodstream. This process changes the experience fundamentally.
Your liver converts delta-9-THC into 11-hydroxy-THC, a metabolite that crosses the blood-brain barrier more efficiently. This is why edibles often feel stronger and more body-focused than smoking the same amount of THC.
The slower onset is the most important thing to understand. Many negative edible experiences come from impatience: someone eats a gummy, feels nothing after 45 minutes, eats another, and then both kick in at once. This is entirely avoidable with the right information.
Onset
30 min - 2 hoursMuch slower than smoking. Edibles must pass through your digestive system and liver before entering the bloodstream.
Duration
4-8 hoursEffects last significantly longer than inhaled cannabis. Plan your evening (or afternoon) accordingly.
Character
Body-heavyLiver converts THC into 11-hydroxy-THC, a more potent compound. Effects tend to be more body-focused and intense than smoking the same amount.
Variables
Metabolism dependentBody weight, metabolism speed, recent meals, and individual body chemistry all affect onset time and intensity. Two people can eat the same gummy and have very different experiences.
What's on the shelf.
Take N' Toke carries a range of edible formats, each with its own characteristics. Here's what to expect from each type.
Gummies
The most popular edible format. Fruit-flavored, precisely dosed (typically 5mg or 10mg per piece), and easy to portion. Available in full-spectrum, broad-spectrum, and THC-dominant options.
Chocolates
Cannabis-infused chocolate bars and truffles. Often scored into individual doses for easy portioning. Rich flavor profiles that pair well with cannabis terpenes. Dark, milk, and specialty varieties.
Beverages
THC-infused seltzers, teas, lemonades, and tonics. Many use nano-emulsion technology for faster onset than traditional edibles. Lower doses per serving make them approachable for beginners.
Baked Goods
Cookies, brownies, and other infused baked treats. Classic edible format with a familiar eating experience. Dosing can vary more than gummies, so always check the label carefully.
Mints & Lozenges
Small, discreet, and precisely dosed. Some dissolve sublingually (under the tongue) for faster onset. Perfect for microdosing throughout the day without drawing attention.
Capsules
Measured doses in pill form. No taste, no sugar, no fuss. Popular with consumers who want consistency and simplicity. Available in THC, CBD, and combination formulas.
Finding your dose.
Dosing is the single most important factor in your edible experience. More THC does not mean a better time. Here's the framework.
Microdose
2.5 mg THCSubtle effects. Mild mood lift, light relaxation. Most people can function normally. Ideal for first-time users, those seeking therapeutic benefits without strong psychoactive effects, or daytime use.
Starter
5 mg THCNoticeable but manageable effects. Gentle relaxation, mild euphoria, slight perceptual shifts. The standard recommended starting dose for anyone new to edibles. Our most-recommended dose for beginners.
Standard
10 mg THCFull psychoactive effects for most people. Significant relaxation, euphoria, and potential perceptual changes. Appropriate for consumers with some experience and established tolerance. This is the benchmark dose in the industry.
High Dose
20 mg+ THCStrong effects suitable only for experienced consumers with established tolerance. Intense relaxation, strong euphoria, significant perceptual changes. Not recommended unless you know your tolerance well.
Start low, go slow.
Start with the lowest dose (2.5-5mg), wait at least 2 full hours before considering more, and never double up because you "don't feel anything yet." The number one cause of bad edible experiences is impatience. Your body needs time to process. Trust the timeline.
Consuming responsibly.
Edibles are safe when consumed responsibly. These guidelines will help ensure every experience is a good one.
Plan your environment
Be somewhere comfortable and safe before the effects hit. Your couch, a trusted friend's place, or a familiar park. Don't take edibles and then figure out where to go.
No driving for 4+ hours
Edible effects can last much longer than inhaled cannabis. Do not drive, bike, or operate machinery for at least 4 hours after consumption, potentially longer at higher doses.
Keep away from children and pets
Many edibles look like regular candy or snacks. Store them in original child-resistant packaging, in a locked or elevated location. Label clearly. This is both a legal requirement and common sense.
Don't mix with alcohol
Combining cannabis edibles with alcohol amplifies both substances unpredictably. If you're consuming edibles, skip the drinks. The combination significantly increases impairment and discomfort risk.
Have a plan if you take too much
If you overconsume, remember: you will be fine, it just takes time. Drink water, eat something, find a calm place, and wait it out. CBD may help moderate THC effects. The uncomfortable feeling will pass.
