How cannabis vapes work.

A cannabis vape consists of two parts: a battery and a cartridge (or pod) filled with cannabis oil. The battery heats a small coil inside the cartridge, turning the oil into vapor you inhale. No combustion, no smoke, no ash.

The oil inside the cartridge is a concentrated form of cannabis, extracted from flower using various methods. Different extraction processes produce different types of oil, each with its own potency, flavor profile, and price point.

Vapes offer the fastest onset of any cannabis product (1-5 minutes) with effects lasting 1-3 hours. They produce minimal odor compared to smoking, making them the most discreet inhalation method. Dosing is intuitive: one small puff at a time.

Hardware

Batteries and devices.

The device you use affects your experience. Here are the main hardware categories available at Take N' Toke.

510-Thread

Standard

The universal standard. A battery with a threaded connection that accepts cartridges from virtually any brand. Most versatile and widely available option. Batteries typically $15-30.

Pod Systems

Proprietary

Proprietary battery-and-pod setups from specific brands. Magnetic click-in pods instead of threading. Often offer better temperature control and a more refined draw. Battery $20-40.

Disposable Pens

All-in-One

All-in-one devices: battery and cartridge in a single unit. Use it until it is empty, then recycle responsibly. No charging, no setup. The most convenient option for occasional users.

Rechargeable Batteries

$20-50

Higher-end 510-thread batteries with variable voltage settings, preheat functions, and longer battery life. Investment range $20-50. Worth it for daily vape users who want control.

Cartridge Types

What's inside the cartridge.

The extraction method determines the oil type, which determines potency, flavor, effects, and price. Here are the main categories.

Distillate

Most Popular
80-95% THC

Highly refined cannabis oil stripped down to near-pure THC. Consistent, potent, and typically the most affordable option. Botanical or cannabis-derived terpenes are added back for flavor. Clean, predictable effects.

Live Resin

Flavor-Rich
60-80% THC

Made from fresh-frozen cannabis (harvested and frozen immediately, never dried). Preserves the full terpene profile of the living plant. Richer flavor and more nuanced effects than distillate. The sweet spot of potency and flavor.

Live Rosin

Solventless
50-75% THC

Solventless extraction using heat and pressure on fresh-frozen material. No chemical solvents at any stage. The cleanest, most natural concentrate available. Complex flavor, full-spectrum effects. Premium pricing reflects the craft process.

Full-Spectrum / Sauce

Whole Plant
60-85% THC

Thick, terpene-heavy oil that retains a broad range of cannabinoids and terpenes beyond just THC. Often includes minor cannabinoids like CBG and CBN. The closest vape experience to smoking actual flower.

Usage Guide

Getting the most from your vape.

A few simple practices will improve your experience and extend the life of your cartridge and battery.

01

Battery Operation

Most batteries activate by pressing the button five times rapidly. Press and hold to draw. Start with short, gentle puffs (2-3 seconds). Let the coil cool between draws to preserve flavor and hardware life.

02

Temperature Control

Lower voltage (3.2-3.4V) produces smoother, more flavorful hits with less visible vapor. Higher voltage (3.6-4.0V) produces thicker clouds and stronger throat hit but can burn terpenes. Start low.

03

Pacing Yourself

Vapes make it easy to overconsume because each puff is small and the effects are near-instant. Take one puff, wait 5-10 minutes, then decide if you want more. This is especially important for new users.

04

Maintenance

Keep cartridge connections clean with a cotton swab. Store upright to prevent leaking. If a cartridge clogs, try a gentle draw without activating the battery, or use the preheat function if your battery has one.

Safety

Vaping safely.

Licensed vape products are tested and regulated. But responsible use still requires awareness.

No Driving

Cannabis impairs reaction time and judgment. Do not drive, bike, or operate machinery after vaping. Effects are near-instant and can be stronger than expected, especially with high-potency cartridges.

Avoid Counterfeits

Only purchase cartridges from licensed dispensaries like Take N' Toke. Counterfeit cartridges sold outside the legal market have been linked to serious lung injuries. If it doesn't have OCM-compliant packaging and lab results, don't use it.

Lung Health

While vaping is generally considered less harmful than smoking, it is not risk-free. If you experience persistent coughing, chest pain, or shortness of breath, stop use and consult a healthcare provider. Vitamin E acetate, found in some illicit products, has caused severe lung injuries.

Battery Safety

Use the charger that came with your battery. Do not leave batteries charging unattended or overnight. Do not expose to extreme heat or water. If a battery is damaged, swollen, or malfunctioning, stop use immediately and dispose of it properly.

Comparison

Vapes compared to other methods.

Every consumption method has trade-offs. Here is how vapes stack up.

vs Smoking

Less odor, more portable, no combustion

Vaping heats oil below combustion temperature, producing vapor instead of smoke. Less smell, no ash, easier on the lungs. Trade-off: you lose the full-flower experience.

vs Edibles

Faster onset, shorter duration, easier to dose

Vape effects hit in 1-5 minutes vs 30-120 minutes for edibles. Duration is 1-3 hours vs 4-8 hours. Much easier to control your dose in real time.

vs Concentrates

No equipment needed, lower potency, more convenient

Vape carts deliver concentrate in a pre-loaded, portable format. No dab rig, torch, or learning curve. Slightly lower potency than pure concentrates but far more accessible.

OCM Compliance

Lab-tested, licensed, legitimate.

Every vape product at Take N' Toke is sourced from New York State Office of Cannabis Management (OCM) licensed processors. All cartridges and disposables undergo mandatory third-party lab testing before reaching our shelves.

*THC and CBD potency per cartridge
*Residual solvent testing
*Pesticide and heavy metals screening
*No vitamin E acetate or cutting agents
*Microbial contamination checks
*Batch-level traceability from extraction to sale

Purchasing from a licensed dispensary is the only way to ensure your vape cartridge is safe, tested, and free of harmful additives. If it doesn't have a lab label, don't use it.
