Rule #1

Start Low, Go Slow: The Golden Rule

You can always take more. You cannot take less.

This is the single most important sentence in edibles education. Unlike smoking or vaping, where effects arrive within minutes, edibles take 30 minutes to 2 hours to kick in. Many people make the mistake of eating more because they think the first dose is not working. Then both doses hit at once and the experience becomes uncomfortable. Start with 2.5 to 5 milligrams. Wait a full two hours before considering more. Every time.

Tiers

Dosing Tiers

THC affects everyone differently based on body weight, metabolism, tolerance, and individual body chemistry. These tiers are general guidelines, not absolute rules. Always err on the lower side if you are unsure.

Micro Dose

1 - 2.5 mg THC

Subtle mood shift, mild relaxation, light mental clarity. Most people feel functional and grounded.

Best for: Total beginners, microdosing for daily focus, those sensitive to THC, first-time edible users.

Low Dose

2.5 - 5 mg THC

Noticeable relaxation, mild euphoria, gentle body warmth. Social situations feel easier. Creativity may increase.

Best for: Beginners with one or two sessions under their belt, casual social use, light stress relief.

Standard Dose

5 - 10 mg THC

Clear euphoria, stronger body relaxation, altered perception of time, increased appetite. This is where most regular consumers land.

Best for: Experienced consumers, evening relaxation, sleep support, moderate tolerance.

High Dose

10 - 20 mg THC

Strong euphoria, significant body effects, impaired coordination, potential anxiety for inexperienced users.

Best for: Consumers with established tolerance, those who have used the standard tier consistently without desired effects.

Very High Dose

50+ mg THC

Intense psychoactive effects, heavy sedation, strong perceptual changes. Not recommended for most consumers.

Best for: Only for consumers with very high tolerance or specific needs discussed with a healthcare professional.

Timing

Onset Time: Why Waiting Matters

When you eat a cannabis edible, the THC must pass through your digestive system and be metabolized by your liver before you feel effects. This process takes time, and the timeline varies significantly from person to person.

Typical Onset

30 minutes to 2 hours. Most people begin to feel effects within 45 to 90 minutes. Some people consistently take the full two hours, especially on a full stomach.

Peak Effects

2 to 3 hours after consumption. Effects typically intensify for the first two to three hours, plateau, and then gradually fade over the remaining duration.

Why People Get Into Trouble

The number one edibles mistake is impatience. You eat a gummy at 8:00 PM. At 8:45 you feel nothing. You eat another one. At 9:30, both gummies hit simultaneously and you are now at double the dose you intended. This scenario is extremely common and entirely preventable. Set a timer for two hours after your first dose. Do not touch another edible until the timer goes off.

Duration

How Long Edibles Last

Edibles produce longer-lasting effects than any other consumption method. Plan your schedule accordingly.

4-6 hr

Low doses (2.5-5mg)

6-8 hr

Standard doses (5-10mg)

8-12 hr

High doses (20mg+)

Residual effects (mild drowsiness, subtle mood shift) can linger into the following morning at higher doses. Do not drive until you are completely sober.

Biology

Body Weight, Metabolism, and Food

Several biological factors influence how your body processes edibles. Understanding these helps you dose more accurately.

Body Weight

Larger bodies may need slightly higher doses to achieve the same effects. However, this is not a reliable scaling factor. A 200-pound person does not necessarily need twice the dose of a 100-pound person. Start at the same low dose regardless of weight.

Metabolism

Faster metabolisms tend to process edibles more quickly, meaning shorter onset time but also shorter duration. Slower metabolisms can delay onset significantly. This is one reason the two-hour waiting rule exists: it accounts for the slowest common metabolic rates.

Food Interactions

Taking edibles on an empty stomach typically leads to faster onset and stronger effects. Taking them after a fatty meal can delay onset but may increase absorption because THC is fat-soluble. For the most predictable results, eat a small snack before or with your edible, but do not take it on a completely empty stomach.

Safety

What to Do If You Take Too Much

Taking too much of an edible is uncomfortable but not dangerous. No fatal cannabis overdose has ever been recorded. Here is what to do if the effects are stronger than you wanted.

  1. 1.Do not panic. Remind yourself that this is temporary. No one has ever died from cannabis. The discomfort will pass.
  2. 2.Eat something. Snacking can help your body metabolize the THC and gives you something to focus on. Simple carbs and sugary foods are often recommended.
  3. 3.Drink water. Stay hydrated. Avoid alcohol, which can amplify cannabis effects.
  4. 4.Find a comfortable spot. Lie down, put on something familiar and comforting (a favorite show or album), and ride it out. Deep, slow breathing helps.
  5. 5.Wait. Effects will peak and then gradually diminish. For most people, the worst of it passes within one to two hours. Sleep if you can.

Some people find that chewing black peppercorns helps reduce cannabis-induced anxiety due to the caryophyllene content. This is anecdotal but widely reported.

Regulations

New York Edible Regulations

New York State has specific requirements for cannabis edibles sold through licensed dispensaries. These rules exist to protect consumers.

  • Packaging: All edibles must be in child-resistant, tamper-evident packaging. Products cannot resemble existing candy brands or be designed to appeal to minors.
  • Labeling: Each package must clearly state the total THC content and the THC per serving. Ingredients, allergens, and the licensed producer must be listed.
  • Testing: Every batch is lab-tested for potency accuracy, pesticides, heavy metals, solvents, and microbial contamination before it reaches the shelf.
  • Serving sizes: Products are designed with clear serving demarcations so you know exactly how many milligrams are in each piece.
Avoid These

5 Common Dosing Mistakes

Mistake: Taking more because you do not feel anything yet.

Solution: Set a two-hour timer. Do not touch another edible until it goes off. Edibles can take up to 120 minutes to begin working.

Mistake: Assuming your friend's dose is right for you.

Solution: Everyone's endocannabinoid system is different. Your friend's 10mg experience might be your 5mg experience. Start at your own baseline.

Mistake: Taking edibles on a completely empty stomach.

Solution: Eat a small snack first. Empty-stomach dosing leads to faster, stronger, and less predictable effects.

Mistake: Not reading the label for per-serving THC content.

Solution: A package might contain 100mg total with 10 servings of 10mg each. Always check the per-piece dosage, not just the total package amount.

Mistake: Mixing edibles with alcohol.

Solution: Alcohol amplifies THC effects unpredictably. If you are new to edibles, consume them without alcohol until you understand your tolerance.

Use Cases

Dosing by Consumption Goal

Different goals call for different approaches. Here are practical starting points based on what you are trying to achieve.

Sleep Support

Start with 5mg THC taken 90 minutes before your desired bedtime. Look for edibles with myrcene or linalool in the terpene profile and consider products with added CBN, which is associated with drowsiness. Effects will carry through most of the night.

Daytime Calm

Micro-dose at 2.5mg THC. Look for products balanced with CBD (1:1 THC:CBD ratios are ideal). The goal is to take the edge off without impairment. Many people use this approach for workday stress and report no noticeable intoxication at this level.

Social Events

A low dose of 2.5 to 5mg about an hour before the event. Choose products with limonene-forward terpene profiles for an uplifted, sociable feeling. Avoid taking more during the event, as the effects will build over time.

Physical Comfort

5 to 10mg THC, potentially with added CBD. Look for edibles with caryophyllene and myrcene terpene profiles. Effects from edibles are distributed throughout the body more evenly than inhaled cannabis, which is why many people prefer edibles for physical comfort.
