What Is Cannabis?
Cannabis is a flowering plant that has been cultivated by humans for thousands of years. The plant produces hundreds of chemical compounds, including cannabinoids, terpenes, and flavonoids, which work together to create the effects people experience when they consume it.
The cannabis plant comes in many varieties, commonly referred to as strains or cultivars. Each variety has a unique chemical profile that determines its aroma, flavor, and effects. When you walk into a dispensary, the products you see all originate from this single plant species, processed and prepared in different ways.
In New York, cannabis is legally available for adult recreational use (21 and older) at licensed dispensaries. All products sold are lab-tested for potency and safety.
THC and CBD: The Two Main Cannabinoids
While the cannabis plant produces over 100 cannabinoids, two dominate the conversation and the labels you will see at the dispensary.
THC (Tetrahydrocannabinol)
THC is the primary psychoactive compound in cannabis. It is responsible for the euphoric sensation commonly called a "high." THC can produce feelings of relaxation, altered perception, increased appetite, and heightened sensory experiences. The percentage of THC in a product indicates its potency.
CBD (Cannabidiol)
CBD is non-psychoactive, meaning it does not produce a high. Many people use CBD for its calming properties. CBD can also moderate the effects of THC, potentially reducing anxiety or intensity. You will find products with high CBD, high THC, or balanced ratios of both.
How Cannabis Affects the Body
Your body has a built-in system designed to interact with cannabinoids. It is called the endocannabinoid system (ECS), and it plays a role in regulating mood, sleep, appetite, and other functions.
The ECS consists of receptors (CB1 and CB2) found throughout your brain and body. Your body naturally produces its own cannabinoids (endocannabinoids) that bind to these receptors. When you consume cannabis, the plant's cannabinoids interact with this same system.
THC primarily binds to CB1 receptors concentrated in the brain, which is why it produces psychoactive effects. CBD interacts with the ECS in a more indirect way, influencing how other cannabinoids bind to receptors and supporting the system's overall balance.
This is why different people can have different reactions to the same product. Everyone's endocannabinoid system is unique, shaped by genetics, tolerance, and individual body chemistry.
Cannabis Product Types
Cannabis comes in many forms. Here is a quick overview of what you will find at the dispensary.
Flower
The dried, cured buds of the cannabis plant. Smoked in a pipe, bong, or rolled into a joint. Fast onset, wide variety of strains available.
Edibles
Cannabis-infused foods and beverages like gummies, chocolates, and drinks. Effects take 30 minutes to 2 hours to onset but last longer than smoking.
Vapes
Cartridges or disposable pens that vaporize cannabis oil. Portable, discreet, and fast-acting. Available in various strain profiles.
Concentrates
Highly potent extracts like wax, shatter, and live resin. Best suited for experienced consumers due to their high THC content.
Tinctures
Liquid cannabis extracts taken under the tongue with a dropper. Allow precise dosing and have a moderate onset time of 15 to 45 minutes.
Topicals
Cannabis-infused creams, balms, and lotions applied to the skin. Designed for localized use and generally do not produce psychoactive effects.
What to Expect When Using Cannabis
If you are new to cannabis, knowing what to expect can help you have a comfortable experience.
- Onset varies by method: Smoking and vaping produce effects within minutes. Edibles can take 30 minutes to 2 hours. Tinctures fall somewhere in between.
- Common effects: Relaxation, euphoria, heightened senses, increased appetite, altered perception of time. The specific effects depend on the product, dose, and your body chemistry.
- Duration: Smoked or vaped cannabis typically lasts 1 to 3 hours. Edibles can last 4 to 8 hours or longer. Plan accordingly.
- Start low, go slow: If you are new, begin with a low-potency product and a small dose. You can always consume more, but you cannot consume less once it is in your system.
