Field Notes / Product Comparison
What Are Pre-Rolls?
Pre-rolls are cannabis joints that come pre-ground and pre-rolled, ready to smoke straight from the package. They are the most convenient way to smoke cannabis without any equipment, preparation, or rolling skill.
Pre-rolls typically come in single units (0.5g or 1g) or multi-packs (3-7 smaller joints). Some brands offer infused pre-rolls that are coated or filled with concentrates for higher potency.

What Is Flower?
Flower (also called bud or nug) is the whole, unprocessed cannabis bud sold in its natural form. You grind it yourself and consume it in a pipe, bong, rolling papers, or dry herb vaporizer. It is the most traditional and most popular form of cannabis.
Flower is typically sold by weight: a gram, an eighth (3.5g), a quarter (7g), a half-ounce (14g), or an ounce (28g). Larger quantities offer better per-gram pricing.

Head-to-Head Breakdown
Six categories compared honestly. Neither option is universally better.
Convenience
Pre-Rolls WinsReady to smoke immediately. No grinder, no papers, no skill required. Open the package and light up. Ideal for on-the-go situations or social settings.
Requires a grinder and rolling papers or a pipe/bong. Rolling takes practice to do well. Setup time is 2-5 minutes for an experienced consumer, longer for beginners.
Cost Per Gram
Flower Wins$20-50 per gram equivalent. The convenience markup is significant. A 1g pre-roll often costs what 2-3 grams of the same flower would cost loose.
$8-15 per gram when purchased as an eighth (3.5g) or more. Buying in larger quantities (quarter, half, ounce) further reduces the per-gram cost.
Quality Control
Flower WinsSome brands use trim, shake, or lower-grade material in pre-rolls. Higher-end brands use full flower. It is harder to inspect quality before purchasing since the flower is already ground and rolled.
You can visually inspect the buds for quality indicators: trichome coverage, color, moisture, and structure. What you see is what you get. No mystery about the material inside.
Customization
Flower WinsFixed size and potency. What is in the tube is what you smoke. No ability to mix strains, adjust the amount, or control how tightly it is packed.
Full control over how much you use, how finely you grind it, how you pack it, and whether you mix strains. You can roll a small pinner or a large cone. Complete flexibility.
Consistency
Pre-Rolls WinsMachine-rolled pre-rolls burn more consistently than hand-rolled joints. Each one from the same brand should deliver a similar experience.
Consistency depends on your rolling or packing skill. Experienced rollers get consistent results. Beginners may get uneven burns or loose packs.
Storage & Freshness
Flower WinsPre-rolls dry out faster once opened due to the thinner paper and ground material. Best consumed within a few days of opening. Sealed tubes last longer.
Whole buds stored in an airtight container in a cool, dark place maintain quality for weeks to months. Flower degrades more slowly than ground cannabis.
The Real Cost Difference
Pre-rolls typically cost 2-3x more per gram than buying the equivalent amount of flower. Here is a practical example:
Pre-Roll Route
- 7 pre-rolls (1g each) per week
- Average $15-20 per pre-roll
- $105-140 per week
- $420-560 per month
Flower Route
- 7g of flower per week (a quarter)
- Average $50-80 per quarter
- $50-80 per week
- $200-320 per month
The savings from buying flower add up quickly. Over a year, a regular consumer could save $1,000 or more by switching from pre-rolls to flower. That said, not every situation calls for the cheapest option. Convenience has real value.
Grinding Your Own
If you switch from pre-rolls to flower, you will need a grinder. This is a one-time purchase of $20-40 for a quality four-piece metal grinder that will last years.
A four-piece grinder has a grinding chamber, a collection chamber with holes, and a kief catcher at the bottom. The kief (trichome powder that falls through the screen) is a bonus that accumulates over time and can be sprinkled on top of bowls for extra potency.
Beyond the grinder, you will need either rolling papers ($2-5 per pack) or a pipe/bong ($10-100+). Many consumers start with a simple glass pipe ($15-30) before investing in rolling skills or a larger piece.
Brooklyn Consumer Preferences
Based on dispensary sales data across Brooklyn, here is how local consumers split between the two options:
Choose Flower
Value-conscious, experienced consumers
Choose Pre-Rolls
Convenience seekers, newer consumers
Pre-roll sales tend to spike on weekends and around social events, while flower sales are more consistent throughout the week. First-time buyers lean toward pre-rolls, but many transition to flower within their first few months as they become more comfortable with the product.
The Honest Recommendation
Most regular consumers end up with both. They keep flower at home for daily use where cost matters and quality control is preferred, and they grab pre-rolls for nights out, travel, or when they simply do not feel like grinding and rolling.
If you are brand new to cannabis, start with pre-rolls. They remove the learning curve of grinding and rolling so you can focus on understanding how cannabis affects you. Once you are comfortable with the experience, consider trying flower for the cost savings and customization.
If budget is your primary concern, flower is the clear winner. If your time is more valuable than the savings, pre-rolls are a perfectly valid choice. There is no wrong answer here.
